Post-Op Care Instructions

Recovering from oral surgery requires care and attention to ensure a successful healing process. Following these post-operation instructions will help you minimize discomfort, manage swelling, and prevent complications.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

After your procedure, a responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours to help monitor your recovery. Rest is important, so plan to take it easy for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activities for at least a few days to give your body time to heal.

Managing discomfort is another important key to smooth recovery. Use prescription medications as directed or take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen if recommended. Applying ice packs can help reduce swelling—follow a 20-minutes-on, 20-minutes-off schedule for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Bleeding Control & Eating Guidelines

Mild bleeding is normal after oral surgery. Bite down gently on gauze pads for the specified time and replace them as needed until bleeding subsides. Keeping your head elevated and avoiding spitting, straws, and smoking will also help minimize bleeding.

Stick to a soft-food diet during the first few days. Smoothies, yogurt, and mashed potatoes are great options. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods that may irritate the surgical site. Drink plenty of fluids, steering clear of alcohol and caffeine.

Oral Hygiene & Activity Restrictions

Maintaining proper oral hygiene after surgery is essential. Be gentle when brushing your teeth. Take care to avoid the surgical area. Use any prescribed mouth rinses or warm saltwater rinses as directed—avoiding commercial mouthwashes unless we advise otherwise.

Limit heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for several days to support your body’s healing. Gradually return to your normal routine once you start to feel better.

Medications, Follow-Ups & Signs of Complications

Take all prescribed medications as directed. This includes antibiotics, pain relievers, or anti-inflammatory medications. Completing the full course of antibiotics (if prescribed) is essential to prevent infection.

Schedule and attend follow-up appointments so we can monitor your healing and remove sutures if necessary. Contact us immediately if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain not relieved by medication, or signs of infection such as fever or swelling.
